I’m Joanna and I am a post doc in the Hammond lab. I use zebrafish and human cells to look at how autophagy (our cell’s recycling process) contributes to healthy bone development and ageing. In particular, I am interested in understanding how changes to autophagy regulation affects bone homeostasis as we age.Previously, I did my PhD in the Lane and Hammond labs studying the role of autophagy in bone and joint development in zebrafish. Post-PhD, I spent 15 months looking at how macrophages support heart repair after a heart attack, before returning to skeletal research in the Hammond lab!

Outside of the lab I love sport (both playing and watching) and I play netball every week, cycle around the city and I like going for long hikes when the weather is good. I love food so I do a lot of cooking and baking, and I love reading. I am also part of a church in Bristol, and I help lead a small community group there.
